Honestly, for a novice user, it is not entirely clear what the difference is between a "deployment descriptor" (i.e. I have also tried to rollback to a previously working version of the application and even this will not work. The WAR in this case does not have META-INF in it, and so, I'm assuming its context should come from the context.xml that I specify.
