Without it, you're pretty much screwed. Disabling anti-virus (MS Security Essentials) or, via Steam, defragmenting, verifying and redownloading has no effect. As I'd just installed a web-cam I uninstalled the web-cam drivers, rebooted, re-verified the game and it has worked fine since.

took 3 days for my friend to sort this out with steam an ea but it was sorted. These options to try may not work for everyone. Also Ive done verify game files too which doesnt change anything unless I delete a few files then it will re-dl them. Also the game froze after finishing an event too.
